UNIT INFORMATION
The Royal London Hospital runs as a Level 3 Unit.
This means that care is provided for babies born at less than 27
weeks and for babies who are seriously ill.
The Neonatal Unit comprises Elizabeth Ward which has 23 medical
cots; 9 Intensive Care, 2 High Dependency and 12 Special Care, and
the 7 cot Constance Green Neonatal Surgical Unit which has
3 designated Intensive Care cots.
Elizabeth Ward:
Elizabeth Ward provides services for premature or unwell newborn
babies. In addition to the work on the unit, the staff provide
advice and information to mothers and partners antenatally and the
resuscitation service for newborn babies born in hospital. On the
postnatal wards, they support Midwives, perform the initial
examination of the babies and oversee the care provided to babies
with problems that do not actually require admission to the
Neonatal Unit itself.
There is particularly close cooperation with the Obstetric and
Midwifery staff and with our Paediatric Surgical colleagues with
joint management of many patients with combined medical and
surgical diagnoses. In addition, because the hospital also has a
large Paediatric Unit there is considerable expertise available and
we will frequently work in conjunction with Consultant Specialist
Paediatricians. Examples include Paediatric Neurology,
Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Endocrinology and
Gastroenterology.
Follow-up is provided to the significant number of babies who
present with neonatal problems and who live locally. Specialist
clinics are provided for babies with chronic lung disease of
prematurity needing home oxygen, those at risk of developmental
problems, and for babies with antenatally diagnosed kidney
disorders or other problems encountered prior to discharge from the
postnatal wards. For babies returning to their local hospital
follow-up is usually best coordinated by their local hospital and
community services, and we will liaise with the original referring
unit to help coordinate this as needed.
Constance Green:
Constance Green provides Intensive Care facilities for babies with
problems requiring operations and those requiring observation but
who ultimately may not actually need an operation. Babies may be
admitted from home and specialist care is provided on the ward for
infants up to 5kg weight who require surgical management. Both
general and specialist outpatient clinics are undertaken.
The unit as a whole enjoys good liaison with the Paediatric
Nurse Specialists and the Childrens' Community Nursing Team in
order to provide ongoing care after discharge. The Children's and
Families Social Work Department provides linked neonatal and
maternity social workers and there are established links with the
Children and Families Consultation Service to provide psychological
support to families when needed. Advocates speaking a variety of
languages are available during daytime hours and interpreting
services can always be accessed.
