Princess Royal University Hospital runs as a Level 1
Neonatal Unit. This means that care is provided for babies born at
34 weeks or older, or for babies born at full term with some
illness.
The medical care is provided by a team of 6 Consultant
Paediatricians, one of whom is the neonatal lead (Dr Shaun Walter),
and an Associate Specialist. The Consultant team is supported by
junior medical staff and an Advanced Neonatal Nurse
Practitioner.
There is a dedicated team of Neonatal Nurses who provide a high
standard of quality nursing care, and this has been demonstrated by
positive comments in Parent Satisfaction Questionnaire
returns.
The Neonatal Unit itself has a physical capacity for 15 cots.
There is an Intensive Care/High Dependency Nursery and a Special
Care Nursery. There are also 2 fully equipped isolation cubicles,
in which Intensive Care can be delivered. There are 2 rooms with
en-suite facilities for parents to room in with their baby, as well
as a family room.
The Unit is supported by a number of professionals to ensure
optimum delivery care. This includes a dedicated Pharmacist,
Dieticians and Consultant Ophthalmologist. Newborn Hearing
Screening is also performed on the Unit itself.
There are excellent links with specialist services throughout the
region.
The unit emphasises family centred care, and actively encourages
rooming in for parents long before their baby is due to be
discharged.
There is an active Infant Nutrition Resource Centre which provides
breast feeding advice and support for all mothers who deliver at
the Princess Royal as well as those whose babies are admitted to
SCBU. The Centre also provides a Milk Bank service for all our
babies.
There are close links with Social Services, Maternity and Primary
Care to ensure all aspects of the wellbeing of babies and their
families are catered for. There are excellent links with the
Community Children's Nursing Team based at the nearby Phoenix
Centre to ensure ongoing care in the Community. This is
particularly true for babies who need oxygen therapy at home.
The Unit is modern and well equipped. There is also an active SCBU
Charitable Fund, which is able to provide money for additional
equipment. It also supports parent facilities and education within
the Unit.
In 2003, the Unit received high praise from its Thames Region
Perinatal Group Appraisal Visit. Clinical Governance is an
important aspect of the Unit's development. In addition, there is
an active multi-professional education programme.
