THE
UNIT
Queen Elizabeth
Hospital runs as a Level 1 Neonatal Unit. This means that care is
provided for babies born at 34 weeks or older, or for babies born
at full term with some illness.
Within the Neonatal Unit there are 16 cots in
total; 1 Intensive Care cot, 4 High Dependency cots and 11 Special
Care cots.

All of the above professionals help to
ensure the smooth running of the Unit and as a team will provide
the best care possible for you and your baby.
VISITING
HOURS
Visiting hours for
parents and siblings are unrestricted, but siblings may only visit
when accompanied by a parent. However, the nursery is closed to
visitors during the Doctor's rounds.
Other visitors are welcome to visit the
Unit when accompanied by one of the baby's parents. Only 3 visitors
are allowed per cot at any time, and children under 16 are not
permitted unless they are a sibling.
The Unit has quiet time daily between
1:30pm - 3:30pm to allow the babies to rest and dark time is daily
between 8pm - 8am.
4 relatives may be named as documented
visitors in the absence of the parents, provided the relative form
is signed by the mother.
Details about care or progress will only be
discussed over the telephone to a
parent.
FACILITIES
Overnight
accommodation
There
are 2 en-suite bedrooms available for parents. Siblings may stay
overnight also (dependent on age) on agreement by the Sister in
charge.
Catering/refreshments
There is a Hospital restaurant on site, and twice
daily snack boxes are provided to breastfeeding mothers who stay
all day with their baby.
There is also a parents sitting room with
catering facilities.
Telephones/Televisions
The ward telephone may be used on request in urgent
situations and televisions are available in the
bedrooms.
Other
information
The
Unit holds weekly parenting classes on Wednesday
mornings.
There is a toybox for siblings who are
visiting the unit, along with a milk expressing room (breast pumps
are available on loan) and deep freezer storage for breastmilk for
mothers.
