To view the Parent Information Leaflet for parents and families of sick, newborn and premature babies cared for in a South West London Hospital, please click on the icon to the right of this page. This leaflet will help provide you with information specific to the unit your baby is in, such as visiting times, facilities, access to interpreters, ward round times, midwifery care, going home etc.
St Georges Hospital runs as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The Unit provides care for newborn babies requiring specialist treatment, including premature and low-birth weight babies and those needing surgery. The Unit can provide a full range of specialist intensive care not available at other hospitals and, therefore, takes babies from a wide geographical area as well as looking after babies born locally.
The Unit is the lead centre for South West London Neonatal Network which comprises Kingston, Mayday, Epsom and St Helier Hospitals, and takes babies requiring specialist care from these hospitals. It is also a regional centre and referrals are made from across South East England.
Many of these babies are severely premature (less than 26 weeks, when normal pregnancy is 40), weigh less than 1kg or require surgery. Some babies who come from other hospitals are brought to the hospital by the Unit's own retrieval team while others are bought by the London Neonatal Transport Service.
The Unit has 35 cots - 12 intensive care, nine high dependency and 14 special care. More than 500 babies a year are admitted to the Unit and more than 160 people work there, comprising specialist medical, nursing, technical and administrative staff.
The Unit works closely with St George's Obstetrics Care Group to ensure continuity of care for parents and babies born at St George's.
A counselling service is provided for parents while their baby or babies are on the unit and if required afterwards. The Unit also has a breast milk bank.
There are outpatients clinics to follow up babies admitted to the Unit from the local area. The Neonatal Unit supports both research and teaching.
