The Whittington Hospital runs as a Local Neonatal Unit (LNU).  LNUs provide neonatal care for their own catchment population, except for the sickest babies. They provide all categories of neonatal care, but they transfer babies who require complex or longer-term intensive care. The majority of babies over 27 weeks of gestation will usually receive their full care, including short periods of intensive care, within the LNU. Some networks have agreed variations on this policy, due to local requirements. Some LNUs provide high dependency care and short periods of intensive care for their network population. LNUs may receive transfers from other neonatal services in the network, if these fall within their agreed work pattern.

The Whittington Hospital is located on Highgate Hill close to Archway, Highgate Village and Islington. The hospital has traditionally served the residents of North Islington and West Haringey, with a combined population of approximately 300,000 who are of a wide ethnic diversity.

Medical services have been provided in the area since the 15th Century. The establishment of the National Health Service in 1948 and the merging of Highgate Hill Infirmary, St Mary's and Archway Hospitals resulted in the development of the Whittington Hospital. I n addition to the clinical service, the Whittington forms an integral part of The Royal Free & University College Medical School.

In 1983, the City of London Maternity Hospital and the Obstetric Unit of the Whittington amalgamated to form the current maternity and neonatal service, providing comprehensive care in both the hospital and community.

The NICU’s capacity has recently been expanded to a 28-cot facility, including 6 Intensive Care, 6 High Dependency and 16 Special Care cots. These include 5 mother and baby rooms, allowing for Transitional Care for well mothers and their growing pre-term infants.

The Maternity Department has 47 beds, including antenatal diagnostic services, a delivery suite, obstetric theatre and high dependency recovery area with full time anaesthetic cover. The annual delivery rate is approximately 3400 of which 100 are home births.

The LNU is run by a team led by Doctors Ed Broadhurst, Roly Blumberg, Wynne Leith and Juliet Penrice. The Senior Nurses are Jasmin Archibald and Kathryn Eglinton and includes an experienced and established group of Specialist Nurses and Therapists. The unit deals with a higher than average rate of high risk and complex pregnancies and provides care to ill term, premature newborns and their families.
