Barnet Hospital runs as a Local Neonatal Unit (LNU).  LNUs provide neonatal care for their own catchment population, except for the sickest babies. They provide all categories of neonatal care, but they transfer babies who require complex or longer-term intensive care. The majority of babies over 27 weeks of gestation will usually receive their full care, including short periods of intensive care, within the LNU. Some networks have agreed variations on this policy, due to local requirements. Some LNUs provide high dependency care and short periods of intensive care for their network population. LNUs may receive transfers from other neonatal services in the network, if these fall within their agreed work pattern.

Barnet Hospital is one of 2 hospitals which combine to form the Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals NHS Trust.

The Neonatal Unit provides care for pre-term infants over 27 weeks gestation and newborn babies requiring medical support. All extreme pre-term infants will be transferred to University College London Hospital for more specialised care. Babies who have conditions requiring surgery are transferred to specialist units at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The Unit has 20 cots at Barnet Hospital, 10 of which are Intensive Care/High Dependency cots and also has 10 Special Care cots at Chase Farm Hospital. The Neonatal Unit serves the local population and also takes emergency referrals from London and South East England.

The Neonatal Team is made up of Consultants led by Dr Simon Roth and Dr Tim Wickham. The Lead Nurse is Jo Wong.
