The Homerton Hospital runs as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).  NICUs are sited alongside specialist obstetric and feto-maternal medicine services, and provide the whole range of medical neonatal care for their local population, along with additional care for babies and their families referred from the neonatal network.

The NICU provides care to any baby born at Homerton requiring specialist care, and any baby requiring specialist care for more than 24 hours from within the North-East London area (this includes babies from the following hospitals: North Middlesex, Whipps Cross, King Georges, Harold Wood, Newham and the Royal London).

Other care provided by the Unit is ROP screening and treatment (Regionalisation of retinopathy of prematurity).

Follow-up is provided to babies who present with neonatal problems and who live locally. Specialist clinics are provided for babies with chronic lung disease or prematurity needing home oxygen and those at risk of developmental problems.

For babies returning to their local hospital, follow-up is usually best co-ordinated locally, and we liaise with the original referring unit to help co-ordinate this as needed.

For further information on the NICU please click here.  Here you will find information on visiting arrangements, unit facilities, accomodation for parents and the key members of staff you can expect to meet on the unit.
