Whipps Cross Hospital runs as a Local Neonatal Unit (LNU). LNUs provide neonatal care for their own catchment population, except for the sickest babies. They provide all categories of neonatal care, but they transfer babies who require complex or longer-term intensive care. The majority of babies over 27 weeks of gestation will usually receive their full care, including short periods of intensive care, within the LNU. Some networks have agreed variations on this policy, due to local requirements. Some LNUs provide high dependency care and short periods of intensive care for their network population. LNUs may receive transfers from other neonatal services in the network, if these fall within their agreed work pattern.
Within the Unit, there are 3 nurseries, known as the Hot Nursery, Cool Nursery and the Cold Nursery. The Hot Nursery is where babies are usually admitted or babies requiring Intensive Care or life support. Just because your baby is admitted to this room does not always mean your baby is very sick, but this is where the admission procedure is carried out and your baby settled onto the Unit. We will then reassess to see if your baby can be moved into another nursery for their onward care.
The Cool Nursery is for babies requiring High Dependency Care and the Cold Nursery is where babies who are almost ready to go home will stay. During a babies stay on the Unit, he or she will be moved to progressively cooler nurseries as their condition improves and as space provides.
