The Neonatal Unit
Hillingdon Hospital runs as a Local Neonatal Unit (LNU). LNUs provide neonatal care for their own catchment population, except for the sickest babies. They provide all categories of neonatal care, but they transfer babies who require complex or longer-term intensive care. The majority of babies over 27 weeks of gestation will usually receive their full care, including short periods of intensive care, within the LNU. Some networks have agreed variations on this policy, due to local requirements. Some LNUs provide high dependency care and short periods of intensive care for their network population. LNUs may receive transfers from other neonatal services in the network, if these fall within their agreed work pattern.
The Neonatal Unit Department is based at the Hillingdon Hospital site. The Unit provides Intensive Care and High Dependency cots, as well as a follow-up of special care to deal with problems such as jaundice or feeding problems. There are a total of 20 cots, 5 Intensive Care, 3 High Dependency and 12 as Special Care. Approximately 10% of births result in admission to our Neonatal Unit.
The Neonatal Unit provides 'family-centred' care, with staff working in partnership with parents through what is an extremely stressful time, providing inspirational work by the Neonatal Unit Team. Parents can bring a relative, although they must be accompanying one of the parents in the Unit.
Babies are also accepted from outside the borough when there are cot shortages elsewhere. The 'family-centred' care provided is particularly important given the long lengths of stay, which inevitably result from babies being born many weeks, and even months early.

Cherubs
About 10 years ago, Nurses in the Neonatal Unit set up 'Cherubs' to raise funds in order to buy equipment for parents comfort which was not otherwise available whilst on the Unit.
To visit the Cherub's website please click here.
This website will also provide you with useful information on the staff working on the unit, location of the unit, visiting the unit and handwashing procedures. It also provides families and parents with invaluable information on the treatment their baby may receive whilst on the unit and going home information.
