To view the Parent Information Leaflet for parents and families of sick, newborn and premature babies cared for in a South West London Hospital please click on the icon on the right of this page. This leaflet will provide you with helpful information specific to the unit your baby is in, such as visiting times, facilities, access to interpreters, ward round times, Midwifery care, going home etc.

Kingston Hospital runs as a Local Neonatal Unit (LNU).  LNUs provide neonatal care for their own catchment population, except the sickest babies. They provide all categories of neonatal care, but they transfer babies who require complex or longer-term intensive care. The majority of babies over 27 weeks gestation will usually receive their full care, including short periods of intensive care, within their LNU. Some LNUs provide high dependency care and short periods of intensive care for their network population. LNUs may receive transfers from other neonatal services in the network.

The unit comprises of 2 Intensive Care, 4 HIgh Dependency and 14 Special Care cots on a 24 hour basis.

The Neonatal Medical and Nursing team supports Kingston's Maternity Unit.

BORN TOO SOON LOGO

content imageis a registered charity established in 1985 by parents and staff to offer support to parents who had a baby or babies being cared for on the Neonatal Unit at Kingston Hospital NHS Trust. It is an amazing fact that 10 percent of all babies born require some form of care on a Neonatal Unit. We have cared for 491 babies in the last year. Here are some of the services we provide:

  • With the help of the local community, Born Too Soon raises funds to purchase specialist equipment for the courageous babies on our Unit.
  • With the help of Kingston WelCare, we have started a mother-and-baby group, specifically for parents who have had a baby on the Unit. This group meets during term time only every Wednesday from 1pm until 4pm.
  • We currently have two Parental Support Officers, Pauline Woods and Louise Mulcahy, both of whom have had premature babies.
  • As well as promoting awareness of the problems associated with having small pre-term or sick newborn infants on the Unit, we provide parents with information and have a small lending library of books available to them.

To view the Born Too Soon website please click here.  Here you will find more information on the work of the Charity, information on what you can expect whilst your baby is on the unit, parents facilities, what happens when your baby leaves the unit, news and events, contact information and much more.
