It is a legal and ethical requirement to gain valid consent before examining and initiating any investigation and treatment for any patient. Failure to gain consent is not an option. However within neonatal practice there are frequently occasions when there is no-one available ( particulary just after the birth of a baby) to provide valid consent and the team will need to initiate treatment in the best interests of the baby.
The BAPM Good Practice Framework for Consent in Neonatal Clinical Care October 2004 provides a number of useful principles.
As a network we have developed a number of Parent Leaflets to support the situation when explicit consent is required because the intervention or treatment is considered to be high risk, and were the risks need a more formal discussion which is supported by written information.
