Standardised Electronic Neonatal Database

Information on neonatal care is an important requirment for good neonatal care. This information system, SEND, has been designed for use in all neonatal units.

The South England Neonatal Data Project led to the development of the Standardised Electronic Neonatal Database (SEND), which currently up and running using the neonatal.net platform from Clevermed Ltd. The neonatal.net platform is a web-based solution that runs on the NHSnet network providing a full and detailed patient data management solution for all the Neonatal Units in the UK. The platform provides real-time patient data entry, cot management, transport management and full unit reporting for all units involved in the project. The SEND Project covers all of London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex, Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridge, Beds, Herts, and Thames Valley networks and is soon to cover other Neonatal Network in the south of England.

The SEND project, established in 2004, has evolved to provide even more features to meet the increasing needs of Neonatal Units locally, regionally and indeed nationally. Links with local hospital information systems can still be provided even though it is a web-based solution with the potential for full integration with the National Connecting for Health Project as and when required. The Neonatal.net platform provides a portal for the neonatal community to share information about reporting, unit related details, research, audit and other related projects.
